Monthly Field Trip Report by Richard Barth

On February 17 our group visited the large private game preserve in southeastern Ventura County. Summer-like temperatures with very strong wind conditions prevailed. The high winds held down the number of birds encountered, but we still had a productive walk.

We tallied Snow Goose and nine species of ducks. Raptor highlights were Peregrine, Merlin, Northern Harrier and White-tailed Kite. A previously-reported female Vermilion Flycatcher was present for us. Tricolored Blackbird, Loggerhead Shrike, White-faced Ibis, Greater Yellowlegs, Wilson’s Snipe, Long-billed Curlew, American Avocet, Marsh Wren (mostly heard), American Pipit and Savannah Sparrow were noteworthy. Other selected species from our list included Eared Grebe, Black-necked Stilt, Willet, Marbled Godwit, Least Sandpiper, Long-billed Dowitcher, Say’s Phoebe, Barn Swallow, Tree Swallow and Western Meadowlark.

After lunch a few of us birded the nearby OrmondBeach area. Some added species of interest there were Mew Gull, Brown Pelican, Lesser Scaup and Green Heron.
