A Young Birder is any young person who is serious about birding, knows some birds, and is willing to learn. SFVAS conducts Young Birders Group walks to foster that learning, helping to create the next generation of birders. The world needs birders, to watch, to identify, to count and to speak out for protection of habitat. It’s not work, though — it’s fun.
The Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve is a terrific place to sharpen your birdwatching skills. It’s centrally located, and a level walk so you can concentrate on the life teeming around you. The lake is home to many spectacular large birds that you’ll have no trouble putting your eyes on. Our docents are highly skilled at helping young birders develop the necessary watchfulness that makes for a rewarding bird walk.
Directions: Exit the San Diego Freeway (I-405) on Burbank Blvd. Go west about one-half mile to Woodley Avenue and turn right (north). Travel about one-half mile to the second possible right turn (at sign for the Water Reclamation Plant and Japanese Garden). Turn right and go east about one-half mile to Wildlife Area parking at the end of the road.
