Just about the most common backyard bird in SoCal. The sort of bird nobody notices until breeding season, when males get very red in the face — must be all that testosterone and competition. These little birds have a beautiful song, and they’re a perfect beginner’s bird: lots of detail that becomes apparent when in the cross-hairs of a pair of binoculars.
