Why P-22 Day is important:

P22 Day and The National Wildlife Federation’s #SaveLACougars campaign

P22 Day Festival is an annual gathering of groups, including Audubon, that believe that wildlife have an important role to play in our environment.  The world’s most famous cougar has inspired us to redesign our cities to be much more wildlife friendly.  This year  the community is very excited about the recent groundbreaking of the worlds largest wildlife overpass on the 101 freeway Joining the Santa Monica Mountains to the Northern open spaces. The population of the Santa Monica Mountains’ native mountain lions, particularly the famous photo of P-22 with the Hollywood Sign in the background in Griffith Park, were an inspiration for the bridge’s inception.  The event is part of the Seventh Annual  Urban Wildlife Week which seeks to promote this idea of coexistence of humans and the natural world.

Beth Pratt explains how remarkable the life of p22 has been and how it has inspired Los Angeles to move in a new direction with our relationships to nature. While most mountain lions have a 200 mile range, male bachelor P22 has chosen a 8 square mile range  around Griffith Park. P22 is changing the idea of where nature should be.  It’s not just out in wild spaces away from cities.  Maybe we could learn to coexist with nature in the city.  The cat has a great imagination to live in the city.  Wildlife is having a hard time.  How can we stop the disruptions of habitats our lifestyles have created and honor the natural world we live with.

The $87 million wildlife crossing planned in Agoura Hills is about to become a reality. The crossing is designed to become a safe passage for wildlife to cross above the eight lanes of the busy 101 Freeway at Liberty Canyon Road in Agoura Hills. Construction will commence this summer, and is expected to be completed sometime next year.     A dozen cougars  have died crossing the 101 in this area .   A #savelacougars campaign has grown worldwide inspired by p22s story.  While this bridge probably won’t help bachelor p22 get a mate it will help prevent the main killing ground freeway (101) from continuing the roadkill of cougars and wildlife.  It will allow a much larger range of breeding opportunities for many species. The wildlife bridge will connect the Santa Monica mountains to open spaces that will reach all the way up to Los Padres National forest.
